Pretty slow book but the ending was okay。 Good actions but the romance was meh。 Pretty cliche I guess。

This is easily one of the best fantasy books I have read this year。There is nothing too graphic in this, but still, I will put up a trigger warning for physical violence。Imagine a world with a divided magic system governed by power-hungry, corrupt rulers。 It favours the strong and the rich while further oppressing the needy。 It's fate and future depends upon the actions of our two MCs。 Both are orphans, abandoned when they were kids。 While one seeks vengeance, other is trying to escape destiny。 This is easily one of the best fantasy books I have read this year。There is nothing too graphic in this, but still, I will put up a trigger warning for physical violence。Imagine a world with a divided magic system governed by power-hungry, corrupt rulers。 It favours the strong and the rich while further oppressing the needy。 It's fate and future depends upon the actions of our two MCs。 Both are orphans, abandoned when they were kids。 While one seeks vengeance, other is trying to escape destiny。 Their paths collide and what comes next is a quest full of dangers, adventures and magic。This book has a perfect blend of mythology and magic。 It has mythological creatures granting magical wishes。 I am totally in for this! Not only this, the book also has a strong plot and well written storyline to support it。 There are so many twists and turns! I could guess a few of them but some were totally unexpected。I was 100% fully, completely immersed in this book the entire time I was reading it。 That itself is an indicator of how good the story was!The characters are so lovable, we can't help but root for them! Even the side characters。 I just loved all of them! I wanted more of their friendship and camaraderie and love。 The ending was so well executed。 Up untill the very last page, I was sure that this was going to be a standalone, BUT that last page completely threw me off!Now I am sure there will be sequel and I CANNOT WAIT to pick it up! 。。。more

Started slow, picked up in the middle, and the ending was kind of meh。

My sweet Ahn is such an amazing protagonist and she deserves the world (Altan better treat her right or he answers to me)。 The trope of a seemingly ordinary girl discovering there is so much more to her is one of my favorite things and Tan was able to do all of it with an extra twist! And Altan my disaster mess, I love him so much。 His angsty, sarcastic self made me root for him from his first chapter! Altan also gives off lowkey Zuko vibes for all you Avatar fans。 For some amazing characters and an intriguing overarching plot I recommend picking up Jade Fire Gold!!! 。。。more

The characters and the romance 😭😭 I love this book so much, the dynamics between the characters, the relationship between Ahn and Altan, the worldbuilding, the magic system, the pacing, the action, the found family element, everything is just so 🥺😩😭 This was one of my most anticipated reads and it did NOT disappoint at all。 It was a welcome break from all the adult fantasy books I’ve been reading, and definitely the first YA I really loved in a while。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It's been awhile I read a 5star book。 I really enjoyed it and it didn't confuse my pea brain to understand the magic。 I loved ahn and altan's chemistry。 I actually loved every single character in this book。😱Two things I didn't like in this book was the single minded determination of altan's in the beginning。 How he was focused on killing the life stealer just for existing and even ready to torture and kill her GRANDMOTHER for the leverage。 Ahn didn't give any reason to doubt her in the beginning It's been awhile I read a 5star book。 I really enjoyed it and it didn't confuse my pea brain to understand the magic。 I loved ahn and altan's chemistry。 I actually loved every single character in this book。😱Two things I didn't like in this book was the single minded determination of altan's in the beginning。 How he was focused on killing the life stealer just for existing and even ready to torture and kill her GRANDMOTHER for the leverage。 Ahn didn't give any reason to doubt her in the beginning。 Later I think the question would have surfaced with justification when she kinda got possessed and felt out of control with all those nightmares and souls。 But from beginning felt stretched。 And the second thing I didn't like how easily Ahn was manipulated through her grandmother。 Anyone could threaten her grandmother and she could abide by everything they says。 And!! Are we getting another book? Through out the story altan's sister didn't give me any positive vibe。 So was it good or bad that now she's resurfacing? And there's also question of ahn's magic。 Personally I would LOVE to have another book as long as they don't ruin it。 。。。more

I could not put this book down! It was not only epic but it was also an exciting adventure story filled with wuxia - ancient Chinese martial arts chivalry, magic, and romance - I just needed。 This was really fun! An excellent debut I enjoyed。

Can I give this book a million stars???!?!?

I love all the characters and I think each relationships (m/f, m/m, f/f) is really cute。 There are rooms for improvement plot wise but the character dynamic was amazing! I love all 6 main characters but if I were to rank them : Leiye, Altan, Taishun, Tang Wei, Ahn (sorry, bestie!), Linxi。THAT EPILOGUE THO。 Can't wait for the next book! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I need more。。。 The plot was good but。。。 here are my complains:1。 Two books。 I feel like it would have been better if this book was divided into two parts。 The first part could have ended when Anh destroyed the Nandah ships。 Everything was so rushed that it felt like I was reading a draft and not an actual published book。 2。 Characters。 The characters are beautiful and hence I need more on them。 I want details about Leiye and Atlan's friendship。 I want to see Tai Shun's love for Leiye and we also I need more。。。 The plot was good but。。。 here are my complains:1。 Two books。 I feel like it would have been better if this book was divided into two parts。 The first part could have ended when Anh destroyed the Nandah ships。 Everything was so rushed that it felt like I was reading a draft and not an actual published book。 2。 Characters。 The characters are beautiful and hence I need more on them。 I want details about Leiye and Atlan's friendship。 I want to see Tai Shun's love for Leiye and we also don't know whether Leiye felt the same or not。 I need more on Tang Wei and Linxi。 I want to know how they fell in love。 I want to see them in love。 (I will come to Atlan and Anh's relationship later in this review。 ) I want more POV。 Leiye was an important character, I want his POV or at least more about his part。 It felt like he was a ghost。 Sarangheel, the twin sister, I want more about her。 I didn't feel happy when it was revealed that she was alive。 I want to feel connected with these beautiful characters。 3。 Missed details。 After Atlan found out that Anh has protected his father from him we didn't get to see the betrayal and hurt in details。 I expected more conflict (?) When did Atlan and Anh even fell in love? It just happened。 I want to see the depth in their love。 Leiye and Atlan's "stable attack" something。 Like what was that about? Atlan never faced his aunt for killing his father and later on his mother。 He didn't face the Premier either。 like the Premier just got shot and died? 4。 What was seriously up with Anh's father? I couldn't understand his motive clearly。 Like did he want to rule or what。。 what did he exactly want? Why the war? 5。 Didn't feel anything when Master Sun died。 Didn't feel sorry about Ama either。 Again, didn't feel connected。 。。。more

DNF at 11%。 I won't finish this book。 This is your generic YA fantasy。 Characters are bland。 The pace is not engaging at all, there is a lot of talking, talking, talking。 Maybe I'm biased because I'm 28 year old but I need strong stories and vivid characters。 I can't take this anymore。 DNF at 11%。 I won't finish this book。 This is your generic YA fantasy。 Characters are bland。 The pace is not engaging at all, there is a lot of talking, talking, talking。 Maybe I'm biased because I'm 28 year old but I need strong stories and vivid characters。 I can't take this anymore。 。。。more

Great debut! It's been great seeing how two characters are foils to each other in how they approach their goals and wants for a better life。 The shifting POVs helped to really get inside each of the characters' heads and bring different perspectives that round out the story。 The author also did a wonderful job bringing this story to life through the vivid details and well-paced explanations of this world。 Great debut! With these limited pages, I believe June C。L。 Tan did her best to explore the world of xianxia and its core elements。I adored the elements of Chinese mythology。 The Mandate of Heaven in which the Emperor is deemed worthy of ruling China with the blessings of the gods is an aspect that was explored。 Dragons and phoenixes are common mythical creatures in Chinese stories。 When mentioned together, they could describe fraternal twins (龙凤胎) which could be a nod to Altan and his twin sister。Ultimately, I enjoyed June C。L。 Tan’s debut novel。 Jade Fire Gold definitely satisfied my need for more xianxia/wuxia content。 However, I would have liked if there were more time to develop things properly。 Though I liked their individual journey, I wanted more yearning and longing between Ahn and Altan, and more wuxia fighting。 Despite that, being able to read a story embedded with Chinese mythologies and culture just warms my heart。 With that epilogue, I’m hoping we get a continuation from June C。L。 Tan because I’m intrigued。 。。。more

This debut novel is such a fun read and it’s awesome to see more Asian authors debuting。 This novel has some wuxia and xianxia elements to it and I love it。 The world building is solid and it has very likeable characters。“History is never written by its victims” Love this quote to deadHighly recommend if you are looking for a fantasy + slow burn romance read。

Jade Fire Gold was one of my most anticipated releases of 2021 and I’m happy to say that I had a great time with this xianxia inspired fantasy。 I haven’t read a fantasy novel that’s this many pages in a long time, but I never got bored。 There were many things to love about it。⋘ ─── ∗ ⋅◈⋅ ∗ ─── ∗ ⋅◈⋅ ∗ ─── ⋙~First, I love that this story plays with familiar tropes from Western fantasy and Chinese xianxia。 The Chinese-inspired setting was easy for me to immerse myself in as someone who grew up on Jade Fire Gold was one of my most anticipated releases of 2021 and I’m happy to say that I had a great time with this xianxia inspired fantasy。 I haven’t read a fantasy novel that’s this many pages in a long time, but I never got bored。 There were many things to love about it。⋘ ─── ∗ ⋅◈⋅ ∗ ─── ∗ ⋅◈⋅ ∗ ─── ⋙~First, I love that this story plays with familiar tropes from Western fantasy and Chinese xianxia。 The Chinese-inspired setting was easy for me to immerse myself in as someone who grew up on a steady diet of period c-dramas。 It was fun to see how June tweaked and repurposed cultural elements that resonated with my experiences。 For those who aren’t acquainted with them, she provides ample scaffolding to bring this world to life with poetically drawn descriptions。~Epic fantasy vibes aside, what really kept me invested in the story was the characters。 The two main leads, Ahn and Altan, each have their own traumas and desires, and a cruel twist of fate brings them together for a life-or-death mission。 I found myself questioning what choices and sacrifices they would make to reach their goals, and whether they’d succumb to their inner darkness。 I liked both Ahn and Altan as characters。 I did like Ahn a little more。 I know that Altan had lost a lot, but his attitude put me off him sometimes。 I loved their banter。 It was a lot of fun。 Also the fact in one scene they’re arguing then Altan is jumping straight into a fight with enemies。 He was definitely always prepared。~At first, the romance between Ahn and Altan felt a little too insta-attraction-y for my tastes, but it gradually developed enough that I started genuinely rooting for them and dreading the star-crossed lovers trajectory of their relationship。 But with the ending, I’m now unsure。 If it is standalone then it still could’ve done with some work。 I’d liked to have seen more of them falling in love rather than suddenly being told by a character, ah yeah, he loves her。 It seemed a little odd。 Especially considering his feelings about the Life Stealer。 But their banter was great so at least they did have chemistry。credit~Not only did I love our main protagonists, but even the supporting characters were also unforgettable。 Tang Wei is Atlan’s closest confidant and skilled with her weapons。 Their banter and not-so seriously rivalry were brilliant。 Linxi is a spy planted in the courts and becomes a great source of friendship for Ahn when she desperately needs it。 Leiye is Ahn’s mysterious savior and Altan’s old friend。 There is so much detail that Tan incorporates so well into her words。 A beautiful world inspired by Chinese mythology, from deserts to mountains, villages to palaces, the expanse from just this novel alone makes me really excited to see how the series will continue ~The ending also felt a little fast and anti-climatic。 Whenever I read this book, I was getting through it so quickly。 Yet, that final battle seemed too quick。 There was all this story and build-up, and then the big realisation basically ends the battle in a chapter。 I would have liked to see a little more。 More of Ahn’s training too。 But again, something made up for this 。 Everything comes with a price and your choice will be paid in blood。 ⋘ ─── ∗ ⋅◈⋅ ∗ ─── ∗ ⋅◈⋅ ∗ ─── ⋙Although the conflict in this book gets resolved enough that it could stand alone, the epilogue of the story creates a clear jumping off point for a sequel。 I’m guessing the publisher hasn’t committed to one yet until Jade Fire Gold succeeds, but I hope it happens since I am at the revelation in the epilogue。 Fingers crossed and please check this book out to help make that book 2 a reality。Overall I was just so swept away with Jade Fire Gold。 Was it perfect? No, but I also know that it’s a debut novel。 I’m so excited to see what June CL Tan will write in the future because I’m pretty certain she’s going to become a fan favorite。 If you allow yourselves to sink into the story and the characters journey’s, you just might be too。 。。。more

I really wanted to get immersed in Jade Fire Gold: it features a diverse cast of characters and I am intrigued by the East Asian elements in the worldbuilding。 While these ideas are certainly interesting, unfortunately this is yet another book that felt way short of my expectations (based on early ARC reviews alone)。Personally my biggest issue with Jade Fire Gold is that it felt very much like a first draft: the writing felt generic to me and is poorly executed in various glaring areas。- Sketchy I really wanted to get immersed in Jade Fire Gold: it features a diverse cast of characters and I am intrigued by the East Asian elements in the worldbuilding。 While these ideas are certainly interesting, unfortunately this is yet another book that felt way short of my expectations (based on early ARC reviews alone)。Personally my biggest issue with Jade Fire Gold is that it felt very much like a first draft: the writing felt generic to me and is poorly executed in various glaring areas。- Sketchy worldbuilding: Being an avid fantasy reader myself I can easily tell if a book's worldbuilding is good enough。 If the worldbuilding is good, it's easy for me to reorient myself when I pick up the book again。 Unfortunately the worldbuilding in Jade Fire Gold is insuffciently fleshed out and I struggled to re-engage with the story after putting it down earlier。 I had to force myself to quickly read it in as little sittings as possible because I was feeling so lost with what's going on。- Incoherence: This is definitely a complication from the sketchy worldbuilding。 The book lacks coherence both in terms of the thematic components as well as the character worldviews。 It's just hard for me to follow through both Ahn and Altan's headspace due to the incoherent writing。 And then I just feel like the ending feels very out of place from the rest of the story UGH。。。。- Poorly executed tropes: Narrated in dual perspectives and based on a few inferences, I feel like the enemies to lovers trope is very poorly executed in Jade Fire Gold。 Firstly I am simply not feeling the relationship at all。 Secondly, I feel like the pacing of the relationship felt very wrong to me。 It doesn't feel natural and I struggled to pinpoint the character arc in both main characters。So yeah, I'm thoroughly disappointed。 Despite its diverse elements, I overall found the writing pretty mediocre。 N。B。 This book contains following content warnings: blood mention, violence, weapons, death, and grief 。。。more

rtc rtc rtc, but in short:This is not the Zutara you're looking for。 ***Normally I'd be the loudest advocate for judging the book on its own merits, however for months on social media the author has been pushing this on the basis that it's some kind of Schrodinger's fanfic (and that has definitely had an impact on the book's pre-release hype and its' reception, judging by the other reviews), so since that seems to be why most readers are here, I will absolutely judge it by that standard。 By the rtc rtc rtc, but in short:This is not the Zutara you're looking for。 ***Normally I'd be the loudest advocate for judging the book on its own merits, however for months on social media the author has been pushing this on the basis that it's some kind of Schrodinger's fanfic (and that has definitely had an impact on the book's pre-release hype and its' reception, judging by the other reviews), so since that seems to be why most readers are here, I will absolutely judge it by that standard。 By the spirits, what a way to set yourself up to fall short (and set your readers up for disappointment)。 。。。more

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley。 This does not affect my review。Honestly, I was a little disappointed in this book。 The synopsis sounded excellent, but it just didn’t live up to my expectations。 I’m going to preface this by saying that some of my issues are definitely a personal preference。 This is a YA book written in first person and both are hard sells for me。 If that sounds like your thing, you might enjoy this more, but sadly, the odds were already stacked against this book for I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley。 This does not affect my review。Honestly, I was a little disappointed in this book。 The synopsis sounded excellent, but it just didn’t live up to my expectations。 I’m going to preface this by saying that some of my issues are definitely a personal preference。 This is a YA book written in first person and both are hard sells for me。 If that sounds like your thing, you might enjoy this more, but sadly, the odds were already stacked against this book for me。 (It also didn’t help that the formatting on the eARC was terrible, and I had to read on my phone, but I tried not to let that affect my opinion)First, things I did like – because there were several。 The writing was beautiful。 There were some truly standout lines here – particularly within the imagery。 Tan has talent and I wouldn’t dismiss another of her books because of this one。 Likewise, I really enjoyed the worldbuilding and magic system: effort had clearly gone into crafting these。 I enjoyed the Chinese-inspired setting and the use of the mythology。 The secondary characters were a delight。 Tang Wei in particular。 I loved her。 She was wonderful and I would willingly read a whole book about her and Linxi, with a side of Leiye and Tai Shun。 The side characters were all so distinct and interesting and I loved each and every one。Unfortunately, what really let the book down for me was the main characters。 I wasn’t particularly enamoured of either。 Ahn grew on me towards the end – she had her fun, fiery moments, and had all the potential to be a really interesting character if she hadn’t been held back by Altan。 Altan bored me。 I can’t put my finger on why, in particular, he just seemed to be the standard broody male love interest and I’ve read better? I didn’t feel the chemistry between him and Ahn at all, so it was a little difficult to really get into the romance between them。 (Another hard sell for me – I prefer f/f or m/m over m/f)Honestly, Ahn had more chemistry with Tang Wei。 I was dying for her to ditch Altan and head off for a polyamorous relationship with her and Linxi。 I think part of the fault was that this felt like it should have been part of a series – I’d have loved more of the secondary characters and I might have liked Altan more if I’d seen him develop over a longer period。 In all, I would read more from this author, but not necessarily in this world。 。。。more
